What does that mean – Peace like a River? I have seen many “moods” of the river and some do not seem very peaceful.
I have seen the river so glass smooth that it is a mirror reflection of the sky. You cannot tell where one ends and the other begins.
I have seen the river with just barely any ripple. Just enough to make the water dance and sparkle like diamonds during the day and twinkle like stars at night.
I have seen the river rough and angry. Where the waves are crashing and surging.
I have seen the river flood and destroy the homes in its path.
I have sat at the edge of the pier and felt “calmness”. I felt the constant flow and reassurance that life continues. I have also sat at the edge of the pier and looked at the exact spot where the river took a piece of my heart. A tragedy so deep and sudden, that I still weep in grief.
So, what is “Peace like a River”? It is mentioned in multiple songs and in Isaiah 48.
Does it mean that it is it always calm and nothing ever goes wrong? NO!
I believe that it is knowing and believing and trusting that God has this. Whatever my situation is today – glassy smooth, small ripples, raging storm, or in the midst of pain and loss – God has this. The mood will change, but the flow will continue. And like the river, your life will flow into something greater, something bigger!
